That's not how I see it. I have heard, however, that Microsoft spends a lot of time crying, "Big Brother, Big Brother, those [often Chinese, but insert your favorite group here] are pirating my software. Waaaah."

Don't believe MSFT minds the pirating (china) in the near term....and it is beyond their control anyways.
As long as the chinese (for example) get hooked on to Windows and Office.
Once their economy develops, the practice of pirating software will decrease especially among the larger companies..from there it will move to mid size companies and so on. The issues of legal liability will be there sooner or later.
The future income to MSFT will be potentially huge from the Chinese market.

The main thing is that people get trained on Windows/Office and other MSFT software in China.

Don't you recall how WordPerfect disappeared very quickly AFTER their market share dropped to about 20% to 30%. It is all about the cost of employee training and re-training.
I bet MSFT expects that to play out in China at some point in the future. I won't get into the details on that subject. Will only say that MSFT even gains by having the Chinese pirate MSFT software like it is some sort of drug.
Of course, addiction is inevitable.<g>
