How many of them were re-elected after the switch?

Several -- I don't know the exact number. Senators Ben Knighthorse-Cambell and Phil Grahm, definitely. Generally these were Democrats from the South who realigned themselves with their newly Republican constituents.

Which is just what Jeffords has done. Vermont is an Independent/Democratic liberal state, where the environment is one of the top issues. Besides, it's hard for him to stay Republican when his traditional New England brand of Republicanism -- fiscally conservative but socially moderate -- has been declared heretical by Trent Lott and GW Bush.

So much for "a uniter, not a divider"
