Yes, I think that Jeffords switched because of issues of integrity. He is a straight arrow and modest man as Senators go.

Jeffords has been a liberal New England Republican all his days. This brand of fiscally conservative and socially moderate Republicanism has been declared heretical by Trent Lott and GW Bush. Jeffords was unable to work with the leadership on issues he has cared about for twenty-five years, such as funding for special education.

Then the White House and Trent Lott went out of their way to snubb him publically as punishment for his not supporting Bush's 1.6 trillion tax bill. That was arrogant and foolish and has received its comeuppance.

He had the Education Subcommittee chair and reportedly will get Sen. Reid's chair on the Environment Subcommittee. This is a lateral transfer, not a huge bribe.
