I'm beginning to feel that much of the criticism of the "boards" have more to do with individual investors doing as you stated in your post NOT doing their own DD, then wondering what went wrong and whom to blame after the fact. The chat boards are a wonderful medium for interacting with other investors, gleaning insight into the mindset of other investors, gauging market "sentiment".... Beyond that, two words apply.... Caveat emptor.
