It's not a 'safety mechanism', it's an excuse for OEMs to provide inadequate heatsinks (using Intel's inaccurate, understated thermal specifications ) and still claim X GHz, while the customer may not realize this performance at the times he needs it most. AMD provides real thermal specs, and if you follow them, you have no problems.

Talk is cheap and you have an empty wallet. Customers are reporting system crashes with AMD processors under heavy load. No one is claiming crashes for P4 processors under any load, yet you only criticize the one supplier who provides a safe operating environment. Amazing!
