Just wanted to share an experience with a modem that may help someone else...

Upgraded a relative's Win98 machine from IE4.7 to IE5.5 by download. No install problems. After rebooting the modem no longer worked. It was not being detected and I had not made a note which COM and IRQ it had used. I software-uninstalled and reinstalled modem, but no go. [I had no install disk for this US Robotics Sportster].

Finally in desperation powered off, removed modem card, powered up and erased any knowledge of modem on pc, powered down, re-installed modem and powered up.

Computer recognized the 'new' pnp device and installed it successfully on COM2 [which had not been an option before].

The key here was physically removing the modem.
