Probably just an exercise. I don't see any real trouble spots in the world right now except for the odd shoot out at a high school in the States. The US has nothing to really defend in the the mid east right now as nobody with an army of any size is on the attack. The J-P thing is a long running guerilla war but there is no military trouble there. It could be that they are being loaned to Taiwan for training purposes. Again China faces vast problems in any putative Taiwan Invasion, as not even Hitler would attack England over 20 miles of channel without control of the skies. China is not dead sure of that. Even with the entire Chinese fleet in the straights they face bad odds from a relatively light defense. The Chinese know it would be very expensive to try this stuff. All their rhetoric is designed to get a diplomatic deal out of Taiwan. This is something that is to Taiwan's benefit to put off for a long time, and that is just what they are doing. Remember what happened when China invaded Vietnam. They had a huge army. Got beat bad. Way too confident. In Korea however they showed the Yanks that they were not without tenacity and good skills at basic military tactics and technology. They had excellent artillery. Where I see the Chinese being weak is on logistics and troop deployment, and advanced air troop support. On the other hand they have so many spies in Taiwan that all they have to do is air drop the uniforms, to hell with parachutists. EC<:-}
