I bet The Great Fair at Thessalonica had the first donkey kebab.

There is a picture in the Catalan Atlas with two men wearing conic fur hats that said "...these two men are ready to go to the mountains where they would lay a piece of meat to catch diamonds." The Atlas is dated 1375 and the stones were probably sold at the precursor of the Russian Nijny fair or found their way to the Khazar empire.

Of course diamonds can be caught with grease from an animal carcass, they have an affinity for the fat. It took DeBeers 600 more years (1856) to invent the grease table for catching stones.
