OT - Speaking of wheels within wheels - continuing in my research on the causes of the Great Depression, Janko and I have been exchanging PMs about the secret German rearmament between the two World Wars (the so-called "Black Reichswehr"), which secretly built prototypes of weapons and trained troops in the Soviet Union, built submarine prototypes in Rotterdam, etc., in the 1920's, years before Hitler was considered anything but a nut case.
The original man in charge, General Hans von Seekt, retired in 1928, and in 1934-36, acted as advisor to General Chiang Kai-Shek in his struggle against the Communists and also against the Japanese during the Sino-Japanese war. He is credited with organizing the campaign that forced the communist Chinese into their Long March. However, his tactics were not effective in defending Shanghai from the Japanese, who learned more modern methods from the Russians.
