Re: Norton AntirVirus 2001
Hi Mr. Mark,
Thanks for the prompt reply on my Norton AntiVirus question.
First, you ask: do you keep your virus definitions current? Yes, most recently 5/22/01.
Now, back to the email protection. I have no real idea how the system was initially changed from <pop-server.my_local_isp.com> to <pop3.norton.antivirus> yesterday afternoon, the first time I had problems receiving mail. Now I understand where to look in the Norton set-up to set the email protection thanks to you. :)
What I still don't quite understand, is that when I set the Norton Anti-Virus to protect email, it automatically changes my mail server settings and then Netscape Messenger is directed to <pop3.norton.antivirus> and can't seem to resolve the address and collect the mail. What I've done now is to back into preferences and edit the mail server dialogue box to indicate my local ISP's mail server. Norton once again tells me I'm not protected. But I can't seem to have it both ways, i.e. I can't have pop3.norton.antivirus as the mail server and receive mail at the same time. Any ideas?
what you have described is not quirkiness at all, though it may all be new to you. Granted, it is new to me, but if not quirkiness, then it's at least some variant of pretzel logic that my staight-forward mind is resisting with some degree of stubbornness.
if you'd like to examine your nav settings, i can tell you that in the most current version, you can click the 'options' icon on the top of the main page, then nav, then email protection. email clients should appear, showing netscape messenger with a check mark in front of it.
Right, so when I can receive mail, I have the red X in front of my mail server name in the Anti-Virus settings box. When I'm in protected mode, i.e. with the pop3.norton.antivirus server in Messenger preferences, I can't receive a thing. In one sense, I reckon this is a perfect protection from email viruses, inasmuch as I can't get any email. But that seems a bit counter-productive somehow.
Sorry for the rambling. No one I know seems to be able to tell me in plain English what the heck this Norton email protection is really supposed to be doing. So I put it up for a general hashing over here on the thread.
Have a great weekend!
Best, Ray :)
PS: A friend is having mucho difficulties with installing an ORB drive on a computer that has previously had Gilat/Starband's application software installed on it. Care to enter this can o' worms? I can provide more detail if you are game. ;~) If you're not, I'm deeply understanding. This one has defied several attempts at resolution. |
