Dave B,
...both camps now staking their "success" on support from Intel

Not necessarily. I think I agree with you that DDR acceptance is by no means assured. However, as via with PC-133 proved, adoption of a memory is not contingent upon intel's support. And Carl was right when he pointed out that INTC claimed PC133 SDR was unstable right to the very day when the via chipsets hit the mkt and sold like hotcakes.

I think the inference is that (1) a P4 socket478 motherboard with a DDR chipset support from anyone of SiS, via, ALi, or intel will be the acid test if there is a future for DDR. (2) The AMD penetration into more mkt share, while interesting, is not enough by itself to push DDR wide adoption.

There is the troubling aspect that unless you use 128bit or 5ns (2x200MHz) DDR (very expensive, used by graphics), you can't match the quad pumped 100MHz FSB of the P4, and when that 100MHz becomes 133MHz, you need sub 4ns DDR, which are even more expensive.

But overall, this drama still has some legs.

Regards,
SbH
