First off it's smart. There is a modem built in so it calls up everyday and gets it's program guide updated, so you never have to wonder what's on or look at a TV guide. You never have to set the clock! You can set it to always record your favorite program and if they switch times on you it knows. The guide that comes up is semi-transparent so you can still watch what is on under neath, the screen is split as you page through it the channel listings are on one side and what is on later on that channel is expanded on the other side.

Second, you can pause live TV and play it back. Ever get an annoying phone call from an old friend in the middle of "Survivor" but you don't want to admit that you watch such a stupid program to your friend. You can hit pause and yak to the friend and not miss anything. It's great for doing your own instant replays and freeze frames. Sometimes when I have CNBS on while I'm at my computer, I'm not really listening but then I hear them say something about a stock I own....so I replay it.

Third, you can search for movies by name and mark them for record.

Fourth, it's a sharper image than a VCR and you never have to clean the heads or rewind and quiet. If you are fast forwarding through the commercials and you see your program come on, you hit play and it backs it up just enough to account for the lag time in eye to hand coordination of the average couch potato, so you don't watch any of the commercial but don't miss a second of the show.

The latest models do 40 hours of viewing. It's got one of the most intuitive interfaces I've ever seen on a box. It beats hell out of the cable company digital boxes for ease of use. My husband is completely non-geek and he set it up in fifteen minutes without any help and without any kind of problem. I used the thing without even once looking at the instructions. It completely changes the way you watch TV. You watch less BS and more of the stuff you want.

The only draw back to the thing is that you start wanting to replay other stuff, like the radio or conversations....you start wishing you had a pause button on everything.
