"I think our little troop would be quite agreeable."

A little naive IMO. Almost thirty years ago I lived on a small commune in Oregon. We were stoned peace freak vegetarians; into consciousness raising, and "Mother Earth News" magazine. Decision making was by consensus; well sort of. After several months it became evident that one or two persons actually carried "weight" in the decision making process and when conflict arose it was one of these who carried the decision. That often involved raising voices and pounding fists on the table. And, from my point of view it was the one willing to go the furthest who actually made decisions for the rest of us. A few more months and it was clear that there was no longer any consensus, although we were all obliged to provide information so that the decision maker would move in the direction we desired to go. When decisions were made that I couldn't support, I found only one vehicle available to me...a hitch hikers thumb....bye bye Oregon.

A few years ago while working on a PhD, I had the opertunity to research the decision making process and models. This shed some light on some of those old experiences. Its an easy topic and an interesting subject. One should definitely give it a look see prior to venturing off to deserted Islands with a loose knit group.
