Lucent, Alcatel May Announce Deal Tuesday Friday May 25, 1:37 pm Eastern Time PARIS/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Telecom equipment majors Lucent and Alcatel could agree on a merger as early as Tuesday, providing talks progress over the weekend, sources on both sides of the Atlantic said on Friday. Both companies are understood to be keeping boards meeting over the extended holiday weekend, several sources in Europe and the United States told Reuters. ``If the talks succeed, and it's a big 'if', it could be announced on Tuesday,'' one industry source told Reuters. Earlier on Friday, another source said negotiations would push on through the holiday weekend and no announcements should be expected during the weekend. Talks between the two companies emerged last week and if they agree on a merger, the combined company would become a global telecom equipment giant. biz.yahoo.com
