Herb: Frankly how can you blame VIA? They are not the only ones making DDR chipsets. Maybe they felt it was throwing good money after bad.

On the other hand, VIA is charging full steam ahead with a DDRSDRAM solution for the P4, so your theory doesn't hold much water.

The best thing that could happen to Intel this year is for third-party DDRSDRAM chipsets to arrive in mass quantities. Single channel DDRSDRAM probably won't be quite as fast as dual-channel DRDRAM, but it will be a heck of a lot cheaper. And with faster DDRSDRAM speeds already announced (e.g. 300MHz from Samsung in Q3), the "gap" to two DRDRAM channels is decreasing fast.
