Guree: Talking about Joburg, your Secretary of State visited here today and had a fierce reception at the University. This piece gives an inkling about what transpired:

"While Powell was speaking, a small but vocal group of protesters led by the SA Students Congress (Sasco) protested outside the hall.

A small contingent inside the hall also interjected frequently.

Shortly before Powell was scheduled to start his address at 3pm, the Sasco students told Sapa they were protesting against what they believed was America arrogance.

Sasco spokesman Welcome Buthelezi said: "We are protesting against the US whom we believe always acts in their own best interest and not in the interest of Africa."

The protesters handed out pamphlets calling Powell "an uncle Tom for both Bushes."

This was an apparent reference to him serving current US President George W Bush as Secretary of State and his father George Bush as America's top soldier.

Powell was the first African American to be appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and also the first black to serve as America's foreign minister.

The pamphlet said America's "assistance to Africa will only mean well for a few and continuing poverty for the masses".

The pamphlet ended with a depiction of a bottle of Coca-Cola next to a picture of Powell and a quote saying: "Take your American imperialism, your debt slavery and White House nigger. Go home."

About 15 students took part in the protest.

When they tried to heckle him at the start of his speech he reminded them that he had just be given a copy of the South African Bill of Rights by Wits chancellor and Constitutional Court Judge Richard Goldstone.

Our Bill of Rights were added as amendments to our Constitution. The first guaranteed free speech but also the right to be heard," he said. "

On TV, they showed another heckler shouting that Powell is a 'racist' and was responsible for killing blacks in Iraq. Outside the hall he was surrounded and had to negotiate with a horde of screaming Moslems to be allowed to leave.

I don't think he'll forget Joburg and I'm quite sure that Dubya won't be sticking his nose in here.

PS. Powell forgot to mention that Southern Africa had been laid waste by the gold price manipulators and conspirators!
