Korea LG Tel says TIW interested in CDMA licence

SEOUL, May 26 (Reuters) - South Korea's LG Telecom <32640.KQ> said on Saturday Canada's Telesystem International Wireless Inc (TIW) <TIW.TO> was interested in investing in a LG-led consortium to win a licence for next-generation wireless phone services.

"We are discussing possible investment with TIW officials, but how much stake they will take in the consortium has not yet been decided," company spokesman Yoon Kyung-hoon told Reuters.

He denied local reports TIW would take British Telecom's <BT.L> 21.76 percent stake in LG.

"I expect it will be a separate investment," he said.

The government plans to grant a licence soon for a high-speed third-generation mobile phone service based on Qualcomm's <QCOM.O> cdma2000, but has not set the deadline.

Last December, it awarded two licences for mobile phone services using W-CDMA technology to consortia led by state-run Korea Telecom <30200.KS> and SK Telecom <17670.KS>, Korea's largest mobile carrier.
