I'm here under State Department auspices, so I'm actually sort of an official representative of y'all...don't know who should be more bothered by that, you or me... As for charming the locals, yeah, right. Tom Wolfe wrote a great piece once on sixties-era poverty program negotiations called "mau-mauing the flak-catchers," which contained unforgettable images of Al Sharpton-like characters badgering meek bureaucrats in a kind of stylized ballet.... I just got my initial briefing, and was essentially told that I should prepare to be a "flak-catcher" for a few days... ctb/A
