. I assume they own the proprietary tech involved in this.

They just won a patent on the technology behind PVRs and this prompted the latest run up in the stock. But the patent is rather wide, so it remains to be seen whether it is enforceable.

TiVo Wins Patent, Stock Soars

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 24, 2001 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- The stock price of TiVo Inc. more than doubled Thursday on news the company won a patent that covers core features of its personal video recording software and hardware.

The patent gives TiVo formal recognition for developing the so-called personal video recorder, which allows television viewers to pause live programming and record shows onto a hard drive.

TiVo's chief executive and chairman Michael Ramsay said the company hopes to use the patent to expand its licensing efforts. He refused to elaborate on whether TiVo would take legal action against other players in the personal video recording space.

The company's most notable challenger is Microsoft Corp., which recently launched UltimateTV.

Jim Barton, TiVo's chief technology officer, said the company doesn't know yet whether Microsoft's product infringes on its patent, which TiVo filed in July 1998.

"It may be - we don't know yet," Barton told analysts during a conference call. "But we're going to recommend (Microsoft) examine the patent and see if it does ... so we could work out a licensing deal."
