Imagine that there is a God. But no religion has hit on him exactly. No one. Who is more foolish? The people who have made up a God that is totally dissimilar to the God that really exists, or the people who believe in no God, of the people who chose not to make up their minds since there wasn't enough evidence? The people who said there wasn't enough evidence turn out to be right, but I suppose it would depend upon what the God was like, to know which humans, if any, he, she or it would favor with attention- assuming any human would be so favored. I see no clear winners here.
Assume there is no God. Who is happiest? People who believe in a God that does not exist, or people who do not believe, or people who don't know? I am not sure it matters. If religion makes people truly happy, then it's like chocolate, or coffee, or amusement parks, or anything else humans enjoy. As long as it isn't used to hurt other human, no problem. And if not believing leads to happiness for some, what's the problem?
Not all of us need absolute values in order to have values. Absolutes, imo, bring nothing to the party, and often are harmful. It isn't play acting to know that I do not want to be injured, and knowing this I refrain from injuring others- although I accept that some people like to be injured, but they are a small minority. It is not play acting to know that I want comfort, and because I do I expect that other people also wish to be comfortable- if people reject comfort explicitly I accept that, but most people seem to prefer to be comfortable. And on and on. |
