"I am now beta testing a cable modem.

And, I am in the process of switching to AOL DSL - for a "free one month trial." For years I have been moaning and groaning about the slow connection I get with AOL....rarely even 28.8 as of late. Then when Verizon started working on the line to convert it to DSL, it was out for a day. So I had to switch to my other phone line which is RCN. Amazingly, I consistently got connections only slightly under 56K. Verizon completed their work, but I still have not received the "converter" (or whatever) and CD that I need for DSL. However, on that line I now consistently get 40K connections. So I guess the problems I have always experienced had nothing to do with AOL, but were due to the phone line.

As a side note, when I contacted Verizon about getting DSL from them, they told me it wasn't available for my number. Then I applied for the free trial from AOL last weekend. AOL advised that they expected the line would be "converted" by June 18, but would confirm an exact date when they receive info from the carrier. The line was converted yesterday, and AOL still hasn't advised me when to expect the conversion. Talk about communications problems! <G>

Another amusing side note. While the line was out, the workman left a phone mail message to tell me that they were coming "tomorrow" to work on it. Fortunately, I have an "email" answering service. Otherwise, I am not sure how they expected me to get the message with a phone that wasn't working.
