The amazing thing is that you have defined a "religious" community of your very own and you don't even see it.

I'm beginning to see X's point that you just don't get it. If Solon and his cohort create a religious-like community, they have no illusions that their mores and dictums are the absolute truth of a deity. They know they made it up. If they know they made it up, they can have a perspective on it and a sense of humor about it. They're not going to get into a war over the sovereignty of their deity. They may get into a war over something else, but not that. They can accommodate differences because they don't have an absolute and inviolate standard that they are commanded to protect.

I think it's most likely that all the religions of the world were created by humans, that some of them conjured up a deity as an enforcer, and that the followers either didn't know or over time forgot that the deity was just a figment. I don't know or believe that to be true. I just think that it's the most likely explanation.

For purposes of my model, however, it doesn't matter whether your religion is true or whether you just believe it to be true. In either case, you treat it as an absolute. Whatever religious-like constructs the island might develop, they would not be absolute. The different between absolute and flexible is my line of demarcation. Your line of demarcation is between your true religion and everything else, which includes false religions and non-religions. Different line; different approach. You see absolute as an anchor. I just see intransigence.
