I completely agree. I think if I provide and atmosphere where children love to learn, and learn how to learn, they will be on their way. I wouldn't want to choose their paths for them- everyone needs different things- but we can all profit from an education and from an environment that fosters humanity. I try all sorts of ways to build compassion. We play a game at the end of the day called silent ball (with a koosh)- and one of the goals of the game is to include everyone. I give lots of praise when children act altruistically in the game- now it is common for kids to pick up the ball and give it to someone sitting next to them to throw. It makes the game just as enjoyable, and no one feels left out. Half way through the game I always ask "Who hasn't had the ball yet?." And I tell the kids to look at the hands that are up- and they ALWAYS make sure those kids immediately get a turn. I've told them I love to play this game, and as long as we play it with respect for each other, we can play it all year. My kids are so into the team aspect they even put themselves out of the game when they violate the rules.

BTW- I got the books from the French bookstore you recommended. The man I talked to was SUCH a nice man. He picked out some wonderful books for me- and he found me the translation for continental shelf which I could not find in my French dictionary. My kids are loving French- although poupee brought one class to a screaming halt. They still ask me to read Bonsoir Lune- which has the maison de poupee in it. I am sure not a one of them will ever forget that word- 2nd graders are such children!
