It only doesn't power down after a defrag. Since i'm about to use the computer when the disk check goes on after a defrag, and i've just defragged, then that night I wouldn't be defragging and when I turn the computer off so it will power down normally....

If I never turn it off, this won't happen....

I think I made a big mistake not getting a Mac for my first computer. People told me it was a "toy," and that Mac presented certain program-compatibility problems at times. Like, you couldn't use programs like icq with it without problems. But I think i'm a "toy" person, if that means, like, rilly simple, and also, my friends who have Macs seem to love them. It's discouraging to read this thread and see that even you smart dudes, even mr. mark, have problems all the time. I mean, clearly it never f-ing ends, and my learning curve is very... gradual, shall we say. I feel like there's definitely an aptitude thing going on. Like with learning a language. Some people have to hear a phrase in a new language over and over again before it becomes "theirs." It's like that with the computer for me. And I get instructions here and can read them ten times and sometimes, if they're long and involved it's as though i'm reading Greek and I can't follow the instructions. Partly it's emotional, in that there's a certain panic that sets in.

I did learn more during the period of trying to solve my defrag problem than in the previous year or two, though. And my How To file is bigger than ever and very useful.

Edit: i'm sure it's also partly a matter of interest. I love what the computer does for me, but i don't have a natural fascination with how it does it. Like, i would never open the hood of my car just out of interest in how the engine works, only if i had to to keep it on the road....

Sorry, i seem to be psychoanalyzing myself instead of talking about my computer.
