>>Brain Circuits and Gambling

Researchers have identified circuits in the brain that may be involved in making gambling pleasurable for some people and a compulsion for others.

The researchers gave 12 volunteers $50 at the start of an experiment at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and then had them watch a wheel of fortune as their brains were scanned.

Circuits that are associated with reward centers in the brain lit up when the gamblers won, while circuits involved in regulating fear became active when they lost, according to a report in the May issue of the journal Neuron.

While those results confirm common sense, the experiment also found that the gamblers' active brain regions overlapped with areas that regulate the levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is thought to be involved in addictions to drugs such as cocaine.<<

I always knew people who like to gamble were different from me, but now I know why.-g-
