NAIROBI, Kenya, May 28, 2001 (AP) -- Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir and the main rebel leader will attend a regional peace summit aimed at ending the country's 18-year-civil war, a rebel official said Monday.
The summit, which is being organized by the regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development will be first time the two have attended the same peace talks since 1997, said Justin Arop, an official of the Sudan People's Liberation Army.
SPLA leader John Garang has been invited and will be attending the talks which are scheduled to be held in Nairobi on Saturday, Arop said.
"The meeting will be for (IGAD) head of states. They (Garang and el-Bashir) will be available if there is anything asked or queries to be clarified," Arop told The Associated Press.
A Kenya Foreign Ministry official confirmed that the summit has been scheduled and said SPLA leaders as well as the leaders of IGAD members - Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti - were invited. |
