AWSJ: Investor Relations Survey Cites Taiwan Semiconductor Updated: Wednesday, May 23, 2001 04:43 PM ET Staff Reporter
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is the best company in Asia for overall investor relations, according to a survey by Investor Relations magazine.
The London-based magazine conducted a regional survey in Asia to determine the current status of investor relations and to identify the leading companies in the field.
"The results showed that there's a fairly even split of winners across the region and that's a positive, strong sign," said Andrew Thomas, associate publisher of Investor Relations.
At an awards ceremony Wednesday night, more than 20 companies were recognized in 16 categories including best annual report, best use of the Internet for investor relations and best crisis management.
When asked whether the quality of investor relations had improved or declined over the past one or two years, 74% of survey respondents said the quality had improved while 18% thought it had declined.
Survey respondents consisted mainly of portfolio managers and financial analysts who were asked to nominate companies in the most important areas of investor relations. During March and April 2001, 580 telephone interviews were conducted in 10 Asian countries.
Respondents were asked to evaluate the importance of the quality of corporate governance, openness and transparency, and the quality of investor relations' personnel for successful investor relations.
The survey is part of a series of similar surveys and events organized by the magazine in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Latin America. This is the first time it was conducted in Asia. The Asian Wall Street Journal was one of Wednesday night's awards ceremony co-sponsors.
In the survey, the top three locations for investor relations are Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Hong Kong- and Singapore-based companies are perceived as being more investor relations-friendly than anywhere else in Asia.
"Singapore was well represented in the survey because encouraging transparency is very high on the companies' agendas there," Mr. Thomas said.
In awards by geographic location, in Hong Kong, tom.com won for best investor relations by a growth market company, Hutchinson Whampoa Ltd. won in the category of best communication of shareholder value and Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. won the award for best communications during a takeover. In Singapore, Singapore Airlines won the award for best corporate governance.
DBS Group Holdings and Singapore Airlines were runners-up in the best overall relations category.
