>> PS what's wrong with Bagels ? :0) <<

Bagels are highly glycemic. A bagel will cause your glucose levels to rise farther and longer than a Snickers bar, ice cream, honey, cake, Life Savers, or Skittles.

Will someone tell me what's so good about a bagel? The standard mantra is that bagels are extremely low fat. Well is that the criteria we should go by? A tablespoon of sugar is low fat as well. So why don't we just carry bags of sugar around with us and eat it by the handful. Coca Cola doesn't have any fat in it. Maybe if they start fortifying Coke with vitamins and minerals we can call that a healthy breakfast meal. After all it's quick low fat energy, right? Now, bagel makers do fortify & enrich them so there are a few nutrients added back in. Well you might as well just take a vitamin!! Also, some bagels are made with eggs, so you get a little bit of nutrition from the egg. But it would be better to just eat eggs then! Just what vitamins and minerals do bagels have in them that are so good? The few nutrients that it does contain, aren't most of them from the egg? (Oh, most bagels only contain a gram or two of fiber, so don't tell me they are loaded to the brim with fiber either.)

>> ' broccoli, spinach, asparagus, brussel sprouts, celery, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard greens,'
This group grows big kidney stones in many people who cannot sufficiently process the calcium. <<

You can find a gazillion different stances on kidney stones. Some people think they are caused by too much calcium, some say not enough. Some blame animal proteins. Some people blame grains and sugars. Some people think dairy is a problem, and you are saying cruciferous vegetables cause problems. The one thing people do agree upon is to drink lots of water. I suspect most people don't drink enough water, they probably drink soda pop or fruit juice all day.

Dr Eades (author of Protein Power)

"Calcium oxalate stones are the most common type of kidney stone. Studies have shown that restricting calcium intake causes and increased excretion of oxalate, which can form stones in the urine. The best ways to prevent the formation of these stones is not necessarily by limiting oxalate intake, but rather by making sure that you get plenty of calcium, along with at least 50 to 100 mg of vitamin B6, plenty of magnesium (at least 300 mg of a chelated magnesium supplement, such as magnesium citrate), and by making sure that you drink copious amounts of fluid to dilute the urine. With those provisions, a Protein Power diet should be fine just as it is."

>> On that Vegan thing, my sister was (is ?) one and now lives in California LOL ,( a Canadian expatriate).
I've seen her diet. It can be healthy, <<

I happen to disagree. I think a vegan diet is terrible. Now the standard American diet is horrible too, and many vegans do eat a lot of natural and unprocessed foods, so they are better off in some ways. But their diet is sorely lacking in other ways and since they don't eat meat or animal products that only leaves carbs--which are essentially sugar.

>> On that pasta issue, I seem to recall that the incidence of heart disease is much lower in Italy than in northern countries like Sweden, Norway etc., apparently even amoung overweight Italians <<

Oh man. Getting into all the perceived advantages of all the different world diets just opens up a whole new can of worms. Everyone has their favorite. Some people are proponents of the so-called Mediterranean diet, some are fans of Asian diets. Some like the French diet. The Inuit (Eskimos) eat lots of fat (whale blubber) and meat (caribou etc) and very little vegetables and no grains yet they don't have heart disease and cancer problems either. Everyone agrees that the standard American fare is the worst though! <G>
