First the statement "we can't discuss God at school"

Perhaps she should say they can't discuss it at school because she's afraid their parents will sue or get her fired. Yeah, that's something she could explain to first graders...

God is personal, and part of our family culture

I understand your discomfort with this. I also felt some discomfort just as I felt discomfort with the evasion. The evasion could come across to a first grader as though talking about God was something one doesn't do in public like it's something to be ashamed of. I'll bet, though, that she was really smooth and it came across just fine. I think with kids this small there are questions one evades until they're older. She would evade a question about where babies come from, too.

I don't see any other choice. I think she did the only thing she could have.
