tc result is it didn't change anything. i still get the bsod. i do believe that the workaround i have discovered is adequate. and, i consider myself fortunate for having found a workaround, as opposed to getting discouraged with the blue screens and yanking zonealarm. at it now stands, i have what i wanted to begin with (an additional firewall), and only at the expense of very slight inconvenience. your idea sounded good to me, btw. :) mark
