When I first asked this question I was under the impression that the Great Pyramid of Giza was indeed the tallest structure up until the Eiffel Tower was built. I cited as my source the Eiffel Tower homepage. After doing further research it appears that DSPetry is again correct that the Washington Monument previously held the title.

WORLD’S TALLEST STRUCTURES
1850-1884 Ulm Cathedral, Germany, 528 feet
1884-1889 Washington Monument, Washington DC, 555 feet
1889-1930 Eiffel Tower, Paris, 984 feet
1930-1931 Chrysler Building, New York City, 1046 feet
1931-1972 Empire State Building, New York City, 1250 feet
1972-1974 World Trade Center, New York City, 1368 feet
1974-1975 Sears Tower, Chicago, 1454 feet
since 1975 CN Tower, Toronto, 1815 feet

Note that the Indosat Telkom Tower in Jakarta will be 1831 feet tall when finished sometime this year. worldstallest.com
