When I first asked this question I was under the impression that the Great Pyramid of Giza was indeed the tallest structure up until the Eiffel Tower was built. I cited as my source the Eiffel Tower homepage. After doing further research it appears that DSPetry is again correct that the Washington Monument previously held the title.
