Iusacell To Battle America Movil, Telefonica In Northern Mexico

Infolatina via NewsEdge Corporation : MEXICO CITY, May 28, 2001 (El Economista/Infolatina via COMTEX) -- Mexican mobile telephone carrier Grupo Iusacell (NYSE:CEL) is planning a major assault on lucrative regional markets in the relatively well-off north of the country, which are currently dominated by America Movil (NYSE:AMX) subsidiary Telcel and contested by the local subsidiary of Spanish-owned Telefonica Moviles, according to a report in Mexican financial daily El Economista. The move comes after U.K. giant Vodafone Group earlier this year paid more than 900 million dollars in cash for a 34.5-percent stake in Iusacell, and is seen as one element of new, more-aggressive marketing strategies at Iusacell, El Economista business columnist Tomas de la Rosa reported. Among Iusacell's priority target markets in northern Mexico are the border city of Tijuana and Monterrey, the financial and business heart of the country's relatively industrialized northeast. A fierce three-way battle for the two markets is expected to unfold over the next several months, De la Rosa reported.
