Telefonica hungry for more Mexican
[Comtex]

Mexico - SABI via NewsEdge Corporation : Mexico, May 25, 2001 (El Economista/SABI via COMTEX) --
Telefonica of Spain recently acquired Motorola's mobile telephony assets in the north of Mexico grouped together under the name Cedetel. This acquisition gave the firm 1.5 million clients, around 10% of the market, but only analogue operations on the 800MHZ band. For this reason and the fact that Cedetel is strictly regional, Telefonica is keen to add to its acquisitions in Mexico with companies such as Pegaso and Unefon permanent targets. To have the funds required for an eventual acquisition (as well as to pay off Motorola), Telefonica is proposing to its shareholders that the firm issue shares worth US$2.7bil.
