Hong Kong, May 29 (Bloomberg) -- Regional Wireless Co., a cellular venture between Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd. and Telstra Corp., is interested in bidding for a license to offer high speed mobile telecommunications services in Taiwan, the South China Morning Post reported.
Regional Wireless may bid for a so-called third generation license with a local partner, the newspaper reported without naming the partner and citing an unidentified official at Australia's Telstra.
Unidentified officials at Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. said the company, which has investments from telecommunications to ports, has no interest in a Taiwan license, while people at SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Ltd. said the company had no plans ''at the moment,'' the paper reported.
Taiwan plans to auction five third generation licenses. Taiwan's four nationwide mobile phone companies include Taiwan Cellular Corp., Chunghwa Telecom Ltd., Far EasTone Telecommunications Ltd. and KG Telecommunications Co.
