PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA (ALA) said Tuesday that it has received a $332 million contract from Thai mobile phone operator CP Orange, a joint venture between Anglo-French group Orange SA (F.ORA) and Thailand's CP Group.
The contract is for the turnkey delivery of a new Global System for Mobile, or GSM, network in Thailand, which includes a complete General Packet Radio Services, or GPRS, solution.
GPRS, also called 2.5-generation mobile phone systems, is directly derived from GSM, allowing operators to provide mobile Internet access on their network.
When completed, CP Orange's network will be the first Thai GPRS network.
Orange is planning to launch its mobile phone service in Thailand by the end of this year.
