Bush Jokes His Cat Is Reason For California Visit ( you forgot -->humor with dignity !)
;-) WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--In a display of dry wit, U.S. President George W. Bush said Tuesday the real reason he was visiting California is to see how his cat, Ernie, is faring. Bush is in the middle of a three-day trip to California, the first visit he has made to the state since losing badly there to Vice President Al Gore in the November election. The state, which is dominated by Democrats, is in the middle of an energy crunch and is widely seen as hostile to Bush.
Neverthless, the president showed he could dish it out as well as take it.
"Some people say, 'Well, what brings you out here?' Well, there's a lot of reasons, and one is particularly profound - my cat lives here," Bush said.
When Bush moved into the White House, he decided not to take Ernie because of the feline's propensity for clawing up furniture. As a result, the cat was shipped off to a family friend in California. "I figured it was time to check up on both of them," Bush said. "I'm pleased to report that Ernie is doing fine. He loves Los Angeles. He's dating. He has an agent. And for some reason, he looks 10 years younger," Bush added.
Earlier this year, Ernie created very minor waves by going absent without leave for a few weeks before he was found and returned to his adopted home. -By Alex Keto, Dow Jones Newswires; 202-862-9256; Alex.Keto@Dowjones.com |
