Self- sacrifice is also an option among the secular, although the context is different. We all die, and it is preferable to choose a noble death, one that upholds principle and/or insists upon one's dignity, than slip away without honor. The calculus would be something like this: is the gravity of the offense so great that a person of conscience would take a lifetime expiating? In which case, death might be preferable......
