<<it could have been simple lack of demand>> More likely lack of supply. Alcatel's advanced phones are for sale. Lithium polymer batteries are available for these advanced phones. But they appear to be manufactured by Sony rather than VLNC. It seems a bit unlikely to me that Alcatel, in finding demand for its advanced phones less than anticipated, decided they didn't need VLNC's huge production capacity, and instead got Sony to agree to provide what few batteries they do need.
