Li wearing hat - media target

After days of meetings and banquets, yesterday came the real sightseeing time under a sweltering sun for some 100 Hong Kong tycoons and senior officials.

They headed off for the ancient city of Jiaohe, a fortress built of mud that was sacked by the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan.

It is near today's city of Turpan, an outpost on the edge of the desert famous for its grapes.

To help the Hong Kong contingent cope with the 37 degree temperature, local girls wearing skirts carrying US-brand name labels, distributed wet towels, hats and bottled water. With no shade in sight they were a welcome relief.

Security was tight with plainclothes officers keeping a watchful eye on the VIP visitors and accompanying journalists.

Pacific Century CyberWorks boss Richard Li Tzar-kai, a recent addition to the group, remained the most sought-after target by the media, eager to picture him trying on a traditional Uighur hat,

Chinachem's Nina Wang Kung Yu-sum, in a micro-mini skirt and sports shoes, also brought photographers running when she jumped in to swirl around fervently with a young man in an Uighur dance.
