Sometimes people attack what they most fear in themselves. That has been noted in the lives of some rather prominent people, and is, of course, well recognized in psychiatry.
Good laws (made by agnostics or atheists even) prohibiting the sexual exploitation of children, good reporting, and good follow through by social services are what is needed.
This is a start. However, laws don't necessarily prevent ugly behaviour. The real goal of society and of course the healing professions, is prevention, and this is more a function of education (and especially the emotional education of teaching esteem and compassion to children) than it is of laws, IMO. Of course, laws are needed, but punishment or incarceration can never erase the original injustice to the victim. It is always better to avoid any problem than to try to remedy it. I'm a big advocate of prevention. |
