World - CDMA equipment makers angry over Nokia white paper
infobites
30-May-2001

Nokia's (Helsinki, Finland) white paper, aimed at persuading CDMA and TDMA operators to shift to a 3G evolution based on GSM, has angered CDMA equipment manufacturers. The dispute may lead to Nokia being evicted from the CDMA Development Group (CDG). According to the CDMA equipment manufacturers, the white paper contains 'factual inaccuracies'. These inaccuracies say that 1xRTT is a 'current-generation' technology, offering 'acceptable packet data services.' Joe Barrett, head of 3G market relations at Nokia, supports the content of the paper, saying that it contains the 'realistic view of the technologies'. CDMA supporters are also unhappy with Nokia's indication that the 1xEV-DV standard will be launched by end-2001, before deployment of Qualcomm's 1xEV-DO in 2002. The ITU has yet to standardise the 1xEV-DV, according to the supporters.

UK - Manx Telecom WCDMA phone problems due to standards
infobites
30-May-2001

Manx Telecom has had problems with the functioning of NEC's WCDMA phones on its 3G network, and these problems are due to the standards which NEC is attempting to comply with, according to an industry source. According to Gary Head, NEC's project manager for the Manx scheme, the vendor is working on test standards stipulated by the 3GPP, and the problems were expected anyway. However, the problems should not have occurred initially. WCDMA and UMTS are aimed at operating in asynchronous mode, while cdmaOne is aimed at operating in synchronous mode alone, according to a source. The best solution now appears for the 3GPP to revamp WCDMA phone specs.
