Aquinas himself said that laws were better framed to restrain vice than promote virtue, as a matter of attainability. But we are talking about rules, not laws, right? Wouldn't I be remiss if I did not make my son study, helping him, of course, but mainly enforcing a standard until such time as he had internalized decent study habits? Wouldn't society be remiss in not encouraging parents to spend time with their children, instead of sending a message that career trumps childrearing? Don't we want to encourage people to do better than the minimum?
