"or to thwart a greater evil." Actually I even consider this an exception. If someone were torturing me to find the where abouts of my children so that they could hurt or kill them I would lie.

So, by your criteria if "protecting privacy" meant reducing a threat to myself or family members I would agree to that one too for the same reason.

I could not, however, choke down the unqualified general statement of sparing feelings and protecting privacy. That would work for just about any kid or adult criminal who was involved in mischief.
