If the person has a need to know and you with hold information or give misleading information I would consider that a deceitful lie. In most cases a comment of "how's your wife doing," is merely a conversation filler and people expect the usual response of "Fine, do you think it'll rain this week?" If not fine, and there is no need to for them to know details, I figure my answer is not meant to mislead but simply to fill that part of the conversation in a polite manner and move on.
