TAIWAN PRESS: UMC Begins Trial Output At 12-Inch Plant

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--United Microelectronics Corp. (Q.UME) has produced its first batch of trial wafers at its 12-inch wafer plant in Tainan in southern Taiwan, with yields higher than were expected, Economic Daily News reports. Meanwhile, Chairman John Hsuan said the semiconductor industry has only just entered its winter and described the recent problems afflicting the sector as just a cold front.
