Yes, the general similarity was the cartelization of industry under government regulation, although it should be recalled that the most ambitious version, the NRA, was declared unconstitutional. The fact that the New Deal was economically dubious is undeniable, although it can be argued that no one quite understood what was going on until the rise of monetarism in the '60s. It is also clear that FDR had an almost childish view of his relationship with Stalin, although some of the problem at Yalta was failing health. My main demurral is the implication that FDR was either the personality type or ever had the power to be an actual dictator. Actually, he never had the control of the federal government necessary for that to be so. Also, I think he was right to get us into World War II, and that there is such a thing as "raison d'etat" which can justify fudging.....
