NetSilicon Provides Wireless Connectivity for NCR Electronic Shelf Label System
NetSilicon’s “Solution-on-Chip” Network-Enables Retail Pricing System
Waltham, MA, March 26, 2001 -- Further advancing the utility of wireless technologies, NetSilicon, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSIL), the leading provider of integrated hardware and software for intelligent, networked devices, today announced it has been selected by NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) to provide its NET+Works™ Ethernet connectivity platform for NCR’s DecisioNet™ wireless electronic shelf label system.

“DecisioNet is a stellar example of the power of networking technology in the retail market, and how companies like NCR can deliver new efficiencies to the marketplace,” said NetSilicon chairman and CEO Cornelius “Pete” Peterson. “The application of NET+Works to DecisioNet illustrates what we mean when we talk about intelligent connections: using chip-based embedded network connectivity to drive creative innovation in the retail and other industries.”

NetSilicon’s “solution-on-chip” serves as a wireless interface between POS terminals in-store, DecisioNet electronic pricing labels on retail shelves, and a local pricing database. The DecisioNet system is connected to the database via an Ethernet backbone. Once installed, the wireless interface allows DecisioNet labels to be positioned anywhere inside a host store or facility with no wiring limitations. DecisioNet eliminates discrepancies between pricing on the shelf and at the checkout, while providing promotional data at the point of purchase and reducing labor associated with price changes.

Among NCR’s DecisioNet customers are K-VA-T Foods, the U.S. Defense Commissary Agency, Rainbow Foods, and Binghamton Giant.

“For wireless networks to play a major and pervasive role in the way information is communicated, a simple, reliable network interface such as NET+Works is needed, which is why we selected NetSilicon,” said Jeff Rollins, general manager, DecisioNet for NCR. “In addition to providing the vital wireless bridge between Ethernet and appliance, the completeness of the NetSilicon solution has allowed our design engineers to focus on product design rather than network integration.”

NetSilicon’s NET+Works provides NCR with complete Ethernet connectivity, comprised of tightly coupled processing hardware and networking software, real-time operating system, network protocols and services, application programming interfaces (APIs), drivers, development tools and utilities--fully supported and royalty-free. By elevating the traditional hardware-only system-on-silicon approach to a fully integrated "solution-on-chip," NetSilicon was able to give NCR an out-of-box solution to reduce development costs, increase focus on product design and meet time-to-market demands.

Rick, If Joe read the IBM release carefully, he would of noted that IBM referred to maintaining "other" relationships with TLS. My concern with the release was that it specifically mentions 4690 support. After my posting, I spoke to David on that matter and he gave me the same scoop as that contained in Joe's group e-mail. nf
