Safeway Tests Electronic Shelf Labels In Silicon Valley
PLEASANTON, Calif. (April 4, 2001) -- The Contra Costa Times is reporting that Safeway is testing electronic shelf labels at two stores in the high-tech, northern California region known as Silicon Valley. The retailer is using the DecisioNet system from NCR, Dayton, Ohio, in its Pleasanton and Livermore stores. Safeway spokeswoman Debra Lambert said the system makes it easier for the retailer to change item prices. "We change weekly a lot of items," Lambert said. "They're on sale, they come off sale, and that's a lot to manage." Marc Lynn, a sales director at NCR, said it costs about $120,000 to set up the systems in a typical store.
