today they have CDPD, which runs in the background and steals channels when not in use. On a fully loaded, high capacity system, they have no spare cpacity, so they get hosed. If they use SMS, then it tends to overlad the call setup, as this is what is used to indicate incoming calls, so they would either have long delays in imode or call setup, or both, and get hosed. If they launch this early without GPRS, they wll suffer a huge loss of reputation (what??) and have a giant customer mess on their hands. AT&T just keeps putting foot in mouth time after time after time. I thougth that foot and mouth stuff was contained in Europe....
