Ali,

What a convenient explanation for you! (Given that Intel has had first grip on the whole Rambus design and implementation since 1991)

LOL! Whatever you want to believe, Ali.

which would give more time for chipset designers to built a Rambus controller, wouldn't it? Unless there are some serious considerations against Rambus in server products...

If you worked in the product development business, you'd know that when you get behind schedule, the last thing that helps you catch up the schedule is making major changes to parts of the product. At that point in time, you minimize any changes to try to avoid the creeping elegance that probably screwed up your schedule to begin with.

Of course, they've had time to design it into the second version of Itanium (and the one that's actually expected to take off): Message 15868817 or theregister.co.uk ("Sources close to Intel's plans in Israel told The Register today that the 870 chipset which will support the IA-64 McKinley platform, will have a Rambus interface. ")

As I said, yes, in hindsight, they might have been able to switch to RDRAM in Merced without affecting what the schedule eventually became. But they didn't know that ahead of time.

As for the rest of your message, that's exactly what I said the issue was -- the ability to get large amounts of memory into the system.
